This painting was inspired by the incredible beauty of the aspen trees in fall as they are covered in radiant gold foliage before shedding their leaves for winter in the base of the Rocky Mountains. There are beautiful aspen trees in many parts of New Mexico but this painting was inspired by trees near Los Alamos. Los Alamos is a unique and beautiful town situated at 7,000 in the base of the Rocky Mountains surrounded by incredible natural beauty (including the Jemez mountains and Valley Caldera). A person could spend a lifetime hiking the trails, climbing the mountains, exploring the canyons, wading in the streams, resting in the hot springs, fishing in the lakes, and skiing the mountain (Pajarito Ski Area is near Los Alamos). In addition to the magnificent nature, Los Alamos is also near Bandelier National Monument where visitors can enjoy the meandering stream, explore ancient Indian ruins, or browse through the museum. Los Alamos is also famous for LANL (Los Alamos National Laboratory) where the first atomic bomb was created that ended World War II. In the modern day, LANL continues to lead the world in cutting edge science related to national security but the laboratory also does other cutting edge research in science and technology focused on making the world a better place for future generations.
